Climate

Sergeant House is in the region of Galle, located approximately 5 degrees north of the equator and enjoys a tropical climate. The finest weather in the south/west coincides with the calmest seas and generally occurs between December and April. The year round average temperature is 28 °C (82 °F). All times of the year have their benefits depending on your interests and pursuits but the best season for swimming at the beach is generally between December and April, however our swimming pool is beautiful all year round, rain or shine! The low-season month of June is, to most residents, the best month of the year, cooler, sunny mornings and occasional gentle evening showers.

Visas

Nearly all visitors to Sri Lanka require an entry visa. Visas can be obtained online at www.eta.gov.lk or on arrival at the airport.

Language

Sri Lanka has two national languages: Sinhala and Tamil. In addition, most young Sri Lankans study English at school and some older Sri Lankans were schooled in English so there are usually local people who can assist you if necessary.

Currency, banks, ATMs and cash

The currency of Sri Lanka is the rupee. Exchange rates are controlled so you do not need to shop around. ATMs are available in most large towns and credit cards are accepted at larger establishments however cash is often required for daily activities. Banks are generally open 8am to 3pm Monday to Friday but this varies with individual banks. Some also open on Saturday morning for a limited time. Banks are not open on Sundays, public holidays and Sri Lanka has many public holidays so you should ensure you always have an ATM card and some cash available. Small denominations under 100 rupee notes are highly recommended, especially if you plan to use public transport. (In June 2016 the exchange rate was Rs. 147 = US $ 1)

Electricity

The electric current is 230V-240V, 50 cycles. Plugs vary, with a three- round prong version being the most common type. Adaptors are readily available at local markets, electrical stores and tourist shops for less than Rs 150. Sergeant House also has adaptors to suit most appliances.

Dress, what to bring

Sri Lanka is a conservative country and we would recommend that you dress with discretion wearing light, loose clothing and comfortable, cool open footwear unless undertaking a trek or long walk. Guests should also bring a wide brimmed hat, bathing suit, flip flops, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, small torch and sunglasses. An umbrella is useful for tropical showers and can also act as a sunshield. Please note nudity is not acceptable on beaches.

Time

Sri Lanka is 5.5 hours ahead of GMT (the same as India), 1.5 hours ahead of the UAE, 10.5 hours ahead of American EST and 4.5 hours behind Australian EST.
